Re:Nylon
Prada has always used nylon as its primary material. The brand's '84 debut of Pocone nylon in its bags and accessory line earned the world's attention, and Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her eponymous label and Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based powerhouse has changed its iconic nylon bags into sustainable ReNylon fabrics. The new collection includes six classic styles - bags for belts (pictured) as well as a shoulder bag (pictured) and bags for totes (pictured) as well as a duffle bag (pictured), and two backpacks - in repurposed ECONYL fabrics made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.
The repurposed fabric is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn manufacturer which produces Econyl fabric from recycled nylon waste that can be recycled repeatedly without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed fabric is part of a larger initiative to change the entire Prada portfolio from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. The collection includes six new Re:Nylon handbags as well as a pair of ECONYL boots and shoes, and a range apparel made of the same material.
Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", the video series that showcases the innovative method used to create Re:Nylon bags. The first video is a collaboration between Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling plant in Arizona that converts old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.
The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's decision to re-Nylon is its most significant reduction in virgin nylon to date. It will save 70 000 barrels of crude oil every year. prada bags for man will also reduce the carbon emissions of the company by about 57,000 tonnes. It's the latest sustainability initiative by the label that recently went fur-free in its clothes and accessories, a decision that was that was lauded by environmentalists and animal rights activists alike.
Recycled Nylon
While it is more beneficial for the environment than nylon, recycled nylon still has its downsides. It's not biodegradable, and will sit for decades in landfills or in the oceans until it is broken down into smaller pieces that could cause harm to wildlife. The fabric may also shed microplastics after washing. However, it requires 50% less energy to produce as compared to regular nylon and is more durable than other bag materials like cotton or wool.

The fabric is made of a combination of waste plastic and petroleum that is made by burning fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources, as well as the carbon emissions resulting from the production of nylon that is virgin. It is also easier than other bags to handle as it does not need to be dyed or woven. This makes it an excellent option for bags that are frequently used, such as yoga or gym equipment.
In addition to its environmental advantages recycled nylon is a more durable and more flexible material than cotton or polyester. It's also able to stand up to the most severe abuse and makes it ideal for backpacks and other outdoor equipment. It is also extremely light and can be easily cut and stitched to form the desired shape of bags. Nylon is a fantastic fabric for outdoor gear, because it's resistant to water and doesn't absorb smells.
When choosing a sustainable bag ensure that you look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification test chemical residues, as well in ensuring environmental and social responsibility. Be sure to look for brands that have this certification because they are likely to be more transparent and accountable with their products.
Patagonia, for example, offers a range of backpacks and yoga gear made from recycled nylon, also known as Econyl. The nylon is made in a closed loop process that consumes 50 percent less energy than virgin nylon. The brand also supports groups that are dedicated to protecting our planet.
